Introduction
The many scientists and visitors that have spent time on Mt. Erebus have called it one of the most beautiful, amazing and harshest places on Earth. On the shores of the volcano are penguin rookeries and gathering places for seals. Killer whales regularly patrol the ice edges. Further up the slopes, "islands" of volcanic rocks surrounded by ice and snow provide a perch for seismic stations and views to the Transantarctic mountains. The summit of Mt. Erebus is a patchwork of ice caves, young lava flows and younger volcanic bombs. Frequent strombolian eruptions from the crater provide stunning sound to an otherwise silent place. The page links at left provide a small sampling of many of the sights and sounds that Mt. Erebus has to offer.
The formats of the various movies and streaming media was chosen to ideally provide free and easy access to the Mt. Erebus multimedia files. Our feed of live video from the crater of Mt. Erebus is accessible through QuickTime only. Eruption movies are provided foremost as Flash video, but QuickTime alternatives are also available. Below are links for free downloads of Apple's QuickTime player and Macromedia's (Adobe) Flash Player.
